As I was driving down the Gold Coast Highway on my way into Broadbeach this afternoon I began to wonder exactly how I was going to pay for my Starbucks Iced Caramel Macchiato I planned to order. I wondered if I could siphon some fuel from my tank and trade it, but I had no funnel…
And yet here I sit, at Starbucks typing away on a laptop I’m still yet to pay for, using free wireless I’ve managed to find, replying to text messages from a phone who’s bill I haven’t paid for two months, sipping my Macchiato. Am I being taken care of?
The other night I shared a farewell dinner with friends to farewell Shamwa and Xander who embark this Friday on a move to Canada. It could be for a few months, or I could be permanent. They don’t know, and I love that. The dinner I paid for with $20 I managed to grab from my sister… I’d forgotten she owes me $40 from Christmas, and apparently the other $20 will be arriving in the form of an iTunes Gift Card she doesn’t want. How that buys me lunch tomorrow I’m still not quite sure, but something will work out no doubt.
Living dollar to dollar is something I’ve become quite used to doing since being fired from / resigning from my job and company I was a shareholder in mid last year. There is a small pleasure in not knowing exactly how you’re going to afford something, but also knowing that it is very likely to work itself out.
2007 saw my debts rise and available credit fall, something I plan to do a bit of a course correction on this year. It won’t be easy, but I’ve decided to take ownership of my horrible ways with money, and hopefully I’ll be able to juggle study, work and friends and still come out on top with a few holidays in between! This year I will focus on the physical, the tactile, the real. Pull myself out of this ethereal stupor I’ve been in for the past few years and get some things done!
In any case, welcome to my blog. This has been brought on by my desire to not only keep friends whom are slowly scattering across the globe on my week-to-week but hopefully also act as some sort of disseminating devices for all the marvellous articles, pieces of software, videos, and other assorted things I happen across in cyberspace.
It was also a New Year’s resolution… but I’ll leave discussing those for another time!
[EDIT] I almost forgot… the coffee was happily paid for by a Starbucks Card I found kicking around my car. I’m glad that somewhere I’m thinking ahead…
